# Citizens and vehicles

> List every character and vehicle automatically, or make officers register them by hand.

`Config.AutoPopulateData` decides where the **Citizens** and **Vehicles** pages get their data from.

| Mode | Value | What officers see | Best for |
| - | - | - | - |
| Automatic (default) | `true` | Every character and owned vehicle from your framework's database. | Most servers. |
| Manual registration | `false` | Nothing, until an officer registers a citizen or vehicle in the MDT. | Strict, serious RP servers. |

> Pick a mode before your server goes live, and keep it. Records point at citizens and vehicles from the mode that was active when they were made. Switching later leaves old incidents, warrants, and BOLOs pointing at people or vehicles the other mode doesn't list.

## Automatic

With `true`, the MDT reads characters and owned vehicles straight from your framework. Officers can search anyone right away, and new characters show up as soon as they're created.

On standalone servers there's no character database to read, so the pages stay empty unless you fill in the [framework adapter](https://docs.redutzu.com/redutzu-mdt/guides/custom-framework/server.md).

## Manual registration

With `false`, the Citizens and Vehicles pages start empty. A person or vehicle only exists in the MDT once an officer registers it, like a real records system. Officers can't attach unregistered people or vehicles to incidents, warrants, BOLOs, or charges.

Registered citizens are saved in `mdt_citizens`, and registered vehicles in `mdt_vehicles`.

### Register a citizen

**1. Open Citizens**

Open the MDT, go to **Citizens**, and click **Register Citizen**.

**2. Pick the character**

Choose any character that isn't registered yet, online or offline.

**3. Fill in the details**

Check the name, date of birth, gender, nationality, height, job, and grade. A fingerprint is generated for you, and the phone number is read from the phone resource.

### Register a vehicle

**1. Open Vehicles**

Go to **Vehicles** and click **Register Vehicle**.

**2. Enter the vehicle**

Type the plate, model, and colors, or click **Fill from a nearby vehicle**.

**3. Assign the owner**

Pick the owner from the registered citizens.

### Give officers access

Only grades with these permissions can register and edit records:

| Permission | Allows |
| - | - |
| `citizens.register` | Register new citizens. |
| `citizens.edit` | Edit citizen profiles. |
| `vehicles.register` | Register new vehicles. |
| `vehicles.edit` | Edit vehicle details. |

> With manual registration, CCTV auto-detect shows **Not registered** for people and vehicles officers haven't added yet.

## Change the mode

> Set `Config.AutoPopulateData` in `config/config.lua` and restart the resource.

## Related settings

These settings change what officers see on citizen records, in both modes. You find them in **Records** in `/mdtadmin`, except the nationalities, which are in **General**.

| Setting | What it does |
| - | - |
| `Config.ShowCitizenBank` | Shows the citizen's bank account and balance. |
| `Config.ShowPhoneRecords` | Shows the phone records button. Needs `citizens.phone.records`. |
| `Config.ShowPropertyResidents` | Shows tenants and co-owners on property records. |
| `Config.HiddenJobs` | Jobs never shown on citizens, such as gangs. They show as `Config.HiddenJobsShownAs`. |
| `Config.Nationalities` | The nationalities to choose from when registering and filtering citizens. |
